Because I didn’t make their costumes

I won’t lie, a part of me feels like I have to turn in my crafty mom badge because I didn’t even consider making my kids’ Halloween costumes.  Maybe next year, but for now, I’ve never sewn any kind of clothing. Plus, I have a lot of quilt-y stuff on my plate.  But I did feel a little bad about it…

I’m really not into seasonal or novelty prints, as a general rule. There are exceptions, sure. And there’s some cute stuff out there.  But I really am not one to swap out decor on a seasonal/holiday basis, so I don’t tend to have much use for the holiday collections.

Then, I saw the Spooktacular line by Sanae for Moda.  And I had a solution for my crafty-mama guilt: Trick or Treat bags for my two-year-old first-time trick-or-treaters.

I used Rachel’s tutorial on P.S. I Quilt for her Friendship Bag [fair warning: auto-play music, scroll all the way to the bottom to turn it off].  Cute, easy, great for a charm pack plus a little yardage, and a nice, small size for little hands who don’t need much candy, anyways.

As a twin mom, I’m used to getting/making two of everything, either exactly the same or very similar.  Plus, I had enough extra that I made a second set to give to another pair of boy/girl twins with whom we spend a lot of time.  Aside from some initial trouble with the size of the lining (the instructions say 8.25″ wide, I found I needed 8.5″), these came together very quickly.

And I love how an otherwise cute little decorative stitch, when done in black thread on holiday fabric, can turn into some Frankenstein stitches. :-)

Anyways, I was very happy with these.  A perfect little size for my kids, and a great excuse to use seasonal fabric in something other than a quilt that I’d never use.

Hmm…. I may have just figured out what to give my mom’s sisters for Christmas this year… time to find a Figgy Pudding Honey Bun!

Those are darling – I however am the opposite of you and because I am making my kiddos costumes – will have not time to make one of these. I do love the idea for a Christmas bag and I even have some Figgy Pudding on hand.

Those are freakin’ adorable!!! I’m sure your kids will love them! I wish I knew how to sew more than a button… that brand new unused sewing machine I snatched from a relatives house isn’t being put to anymore use in my closet than it was in hers unfortunately.

These turned out so cute! How long did it take you to make them?

Thank you for the inspiration! I had seen the tutorial and loved it but didn’t see a use of it for me. Now I know it’s perfect for my nieces for Halloween!

Wow, these are so awesome! I’m starting to delve into sewing myself and while I am miles away from even attempting a quilting class, I would love to attempt these; we just finished making a purse in my sewing class. This is probably a stupid question, but do you buy the fabric already in strips or do you cut them to size?

I am loving these! Cuter than the original even (of course, that’s just ’cause I REALLY like bright Halloween fabrics!)

Okay, do not feel bad at all!
I think sometime we Moms get into our crafty phase and thereby eliminate that possibility for our children. What I mean is, all my kids had to scrounge, invent, make, raid closets and borrow and trade to assemble their Halloween outfits. Occasionally I could be pressed into service to help cut the hem of an old pair of green sweatpants into zigzags for Peter Pan. Or help them figure out how to attach the collar to their Dracula cape. Or remind them that the people across the street had a wig that would fit their outfit perfectly. I did sometimes make a simple costume, and even once a clown outfit, but for the most part, it was up to them to express their creativity and figure out things for themselves. I think we all had a better time for it. I loved seeing what they came up with!

So, no bad feelings, especially since they have these terrific bags!
