Trichromatic

Does it seem like I’ve fallen off the face of the earth? Because I rather feel as though I have.  In the last month, I’ve been attempting to potty train both of my 2.5-year-olds (with some substantial success, and some substantial bumps in the road, as these things go), having some running setbacks in the lead-up to my very first race (5K next Saturday), and generally felt like I have lost my mind and my motivation.

But I have been sewing. A lot of progress, and as of this weekend, I finally feel like I’m caught up and can breathe. The big finish to cross off the list is my swap quilt for DQS8.  For whatever reason, I had a really hard time settling on a design for this quilt. I considered what felt like a million different things. My swap partner has different likes than I do, as well as some fairly specific preferences for color. I’m not sure why, but it just really stumped me.  Eventually, though, I hit on string blocks and I’m really glad that I did.

DQS8 - Trichromatic (front)

My partner specifically requested black and red, with the possibility of some other colors, so I just ran with it.  I’m of two minds on the string blocks. I think they’re cool, a nice way to use up scraps, and all of that. But they’re kind of a pain to put together, I think especially when I was trying to do them all at once. Maybe I’d feel differently if I was doing at as a long-term scrapbusting project, but as this was all at once, it felt a little tedious.  That said, I liked the way they came together, and I actually really loved trimming them down after they were all done.  It went from this messy, chaotic pile of scraps, to a nice, neat stack of perfect blocks.  After that, of course, it was all super fast.

As I often do, I polled Twitter for suggestions on how to quilt it.  A friend suggested concentric squares and I immediately knew that was the right way to go. I marked them all out with washable pen, and they’re about an inch in between each one.

DQS8 - Trichromatic (back)

Anyways, I’m happy with it. I enjoyed making it, even if I had a bit of a hard time finding my way there. And I’m hoping I struck a good note between trying to make something that my partner would like, while also making something that I feel good about.  I know the latter is true, and the package is headed out in the mail in the morning, so hopefully the former will be true as well!

Not sure if I’ll do the next round of the swap. I like it, but I think I was a bit over-committed this past month or so, and should consider saying “no,” even though it sounds like fun…

For Me?

Ooh, ooh!  You can just imagine the happy squeals when my mail carrier arrived yesterday and had a big envelope for me, all the way from Australia!

DQS7 - Received!

Hooray, it’s my adorable DQS7 swap from Erin!  It is so lovely.  Great colors, simple but pretty blocks. Adorable cherry print on the back, and a great purple (arguably my favorite color!) binding.  I love it!  And just because she’s sweet, she included some TimTams, which she says are a big favorite in Australia. I tried one last night, and I can see why!

DQS7 - Received!

I’m not the only one who adores it. My daughter carried it around for half the morning, mostly saying it was her “dress” and delightedly pointing out all of the colors.  Erin, clearly she is a big fan of your work!

So thank you, thank you!  What a delightful package to get in the mail.

I am very pleased to announce that my DQS7 quilt is complete!

DQS7, Finished!

It’s sort of a nine-patch of wonky log cabins, if that makes any sense at all.  Nice, bright pieces from my scrap pile, with a bit of white to give it some space.  The quilting is done in white thread in a sort of square-spiral to mimic the blocks. I didn’t measure it, but I think it’s about 20 inches, square (before washing, haven’t decided if I’ll wash before sending or not).

DQS7, Back

I really like the back, and think my partner will, too.  That big pink floral was in my scrap bin from a previously abandoned project, and I’m glad I got to use a nice big piece of it.  The label might be my new favorite method, courtesy of Sarah’s tutorial.

DQS7, Folded

I thought the crazy colors and sort of wild, almost sparkly print for the binding worked pretty well. I was worried it would be too busy against the front, but I think it’s OK. And it’s only a doll-sized quilt, after all, I think you can get away with it being a little busy and not have it get overwhelming.

Anyways, it’s done! Yay! Just want to get a goodie or two to send with it, and then I’ll ship it off to its secret new home.

In the meantime, I’ve also finished the two ragged-square tops for Marie’s kids, and just need to baste and quilt them. Marie, I hope you like the preview!

Two ragged square tops

I’ve also got two commissioned quilts for baby boys in the works, both of which were requested to have some blue and brown, so I’m actually using a lot of the same prints.  The pile of fabric was just sitting up on my shelf, mocking me, so I finally did all of the cutting yesterday just to feel like I was finally making progress on them.  One will be a small version of the stacked coins quilt, the other will be a zig-zag.

Buried in Fabric

Feeling a little crazed and behind-the-ball now that I’m back from vacation.  I suddenly realized that I have (at least) five quilts plus three new Bee blocks that need to be done by the end of September.  Thankfully, four of the five quilts are rather small, but still. I feel like I’m really frantic to get them done. Maybe because I have so many others on my list that have yet to be started?

Progress check is as follows…

Two ragged-square quilts for Marie, one top is mostly pieced and the other is cut and ready to be put together. My only debate at the moment is whether to make it 24×30 or 24×36. They’re six-inch blocks, and I just can’t decide if the 24×36 looks too oblong or if it works. Will have to ask my husband for a non-sewer’s judgment this evening.

My swap quilt for DQS7 is moving along.  I finished my nine wonky log cabin blocks last night, so they’re ready to become a completed quilt top. Hopefully it should move on pretty quickly from here. The blocks themselves were a bit slow-moving, but assembly of the top will be straightforward and I think I know what I’m doing for backing and quilting.  I hope my partner likes it!

Blocks, done!

The other two on the list are also custom orders for baby gifts. One is a small coin quilt, and one is a slightly larger zig-zag.  Both include a lot of brown and blue and some green, so there will probably be a fair amount of fabric overlap. I’ve got most of the fabric set aside, but haven’t cut it yet.

It doesn’t help that summer has arrived with a vengeance, making up for a very chilly start. Heat index is well above 90 today, and my house is sorely lacking in central air.  Let’s see how much I can get done with a fan pointed straight at my head…

Because I’m a glutton for punishment and having five projects on my to-do list, I decided to add two three more. Gah!  As it is, I finally have all of the fabrics I needed for Mary‘s daughter’s quilt, and have started putting the blocks together. Mary, hope you like the little preview!

As for new stuff, I couldn’t resist joining the next project that has grown out of the Old Red Barn Co quilt-along: zig-zags! I’ve done a zig-zag before, of course (the baby for whom it was destined arrived yesterday, welcome to the world, Marcella!). And I have another one on my to-do list (a “commissioned” quilt for my husband’s aunt). But the ORBCo version will actually be done with half-square triangles. Plus, I’ve got a fat quarter bundle of Neptune just begging to be used.  I think I’m going to do two small (40″ square) quilts, one a little more girly and one a little more boyish.  Yes, I have boy/girl twins and a thing for fairness and symmetry, why do you ask?  Thankfully, though, these have no particular deadline, so they can get bumped down in the priority list if they need to be.

And finally, I’ve joined my very first swap!  I’m doing the DQS7, and I’m both excited and totally nervous. What if the person I get is actually a REALLY good quilter and I send my lame beginner stuff and they’re really disappointed?  Gah!  But I’m looking forward to having an excuse to try something new and send it to someone who will hopefully enjoy it.  We’ll get our “assignments” next week, so I look forward to trying to figure out what my partner likes and figuring out what swaps are all about.

In the meantime, I’ve got two nearly-finished items on the pile for the trip to Chicago.  Binding attached, all it needs is the hand-sewing on the back.  It’s the nine-patch quilt and a cute little sock monkey baby quilt for my friend’s second son, due to arrive in the next week or two.

I’ve got (theoretically) 12 more sewing days until we leave… we’ll see how much more can get added to that pile! I’m hoping for at least one more, but who knows what life will throw my way in the meantime.

It was 9PM Friday night.  We talked to some friends on the phone and decided we would finally go visit them on Sunday afternoon. Haven’t seen them in quite some time.  Long enough that we have yet to meet their youngest son, now three whole months old.  Shame, shame, shame.  Anyways, plans were made for Sunday.

And here I am, thinking… how can I go out and meet a very good friend’s new baby and not bring him a quilt?

So I ran upstairs (where I had been in the middle of working on my strip sets for the Old Red Barn Co quilt-along) and look at the stack of fat quarters I picked up in MaineHello, duck and frog novelty prints! Won’t you be cute with that white-on-navy polka dot? But what is simple and quick enough to get from start to finish in 36 hours, when you still have to take care of two toddlers?

I sketched out a little sunshine and shadows thing, three fabrics, 4.5″ squares, 7 across and 7 down.  Need 16 squares of two of the prints, 17 of the one that lands in the center and the outside corners.  Start cutting. DOH!  Genius, you can only get 16 4.5″ squares from a fat quarter. Hrm. Improvise.  Center square will be a different yellow fabric, but I’ll use it to embroider the baby’s initials.  Sweet!

Embroidery closeup

The top was pieced by 11PM Friday night.  The next morning, I ran out to Joann’s to get some fabric for the back and the binding, as I wasn’t thrilled with my stash options.  Quilted quick diagonal lines in a variegated red/orange/yellow thread, except for the center block, which got three concentric squares around the embroidered initials.  Had it bound and in the washing machine by midnight.

Backing and quilting

Sunday morning, threw it in the dryer.  Shrinky, crinkly goodness. Made and stitched on a quick label.  While packing a bag for the excursion out to our friends’ house and rounding up the kids into the car, made my husband hold it up so I could snap a picture.

Full view, quilt front

Ran out to get friends’ oldest son a birthday present, grabbed lunch with the kiddos.  Packed them into the car just as they were getting nice and drowsy, ready for them to sleep on the way to our friends’ house (about an hour away).  Started the car.  Phone rang.  Friends sick. Plans canceled.

Scrambled to keep kids awake on the way home so they’d take an actual nap when we got there.

Quilt finished. No idea when we’ll see them.

Sigh.  After all that rush, it comes to a screeching halt.

Folded

It’s not the fanciest or funkiest design you’ve ever seen.  It’s super simple, and it’s small (26″ square after dryer shrinkage).  But it’s cute and snuggly.  How much do you love that Duck Duck Goose print?  Or the little frog holding his own doll?  Backing is a cute frog print from Joann’s, and the striped binding (yes, I’m in a striped binding zone right now) is, I believe, from the same line as the backing.

At any rate, hopefully we’ll get around to seeing them soon.  Or maybe I’ll just throw this in the mail, in case it takes us another 3-6 months to coordinate a weekend.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled quilting.

Playing along with Finished for Friday at Lit & Laundry today…. and it’s my TENTH finish of the year!  Ah, who are we kidding, it’s my 10th finish in under three months. There wasn’t really any sewing the first three months of the year. :-)

This quilt top has been sitting on the back burner since right about the time I started this blog.  It was one more doll quilt that I wanted to make to add to my Etsy shop, but the sudden flare of quilting obsession, two quilt-alongs, and a couple of custom orders always bumped it further down on the to-do list.  In fact, it wasn’t even listed on my white board of works in progress.  But I realized it would be a great little thing to bring with me to Maine last weekend, so I got the quilting all done and binding attached, and perfect little project it was!

Pinwheel doll quilt

It will get listed in my Etsy shop as soon as I get around to writing up the listing, maybe this afternoon? Honestly, it’s been an exhausting week, so if a nap wins out this afternoon, you won’t hear me complaining.

Pinwheel doll quilt

The Framed Pinwheel pattern was from a tutorial on About.com.  The fabrics are some fat quarters I picked up at Joann’s, and the backing is a Moda print from my local quilt shop.  I’m a sucker for a striped binding.  The final measurement is 19″ x 25″, a nice little toddler lovey, doll blanket, or even something nice to tuck into a carseat. Quilting was pretty much in the ditch with a varigated rainbow-colored thread.

Lit and LaundryAlright, so that title is going to get me some very weird Google hits. Ah well. Time to play along with Finished for Friday at Lit & Laundry!

Finished bright and early this morning is the set of dog-themed ragged square quilts and matching pillows for a custom Etsy order by my friend LauraC.  (And by bright and early, I mean my husband’s snoring and kids’ yodeling woke me up at about 6:15. I knew I wasn’t going to fall back asleep, so I made the pillowcases before I got the kids out of bed. Rebecca wasn’t real pleased toward the end, there, but we all survived.)

Doggie Quilts

All that remains is to sew on some labels (more on those later) and run them through the washer and dryer for that soft, ragged-y goodness.  Why haven’t I washed them yet?  Ahem.  It might have something to do with the fact that my husband attempted (on his friend’s recommendation) to fix our underperforming dryer on Wednesday night.  Thursday afternoon, I went to Sears and purchased a new washer/dryer set.  That’s how well Wednesday night went.  Did I mention he started his “fix” while there was already a wet load of clothes in the washer? Awesome.

Anyways, these super-cute quilts and pillows are for two little boys about to turn three years old, and their favorite puppy stuffed animals. One blue, one red.  The twin thing, as I well know, can be tricky.  Sometimes you want them each to have something, and you want it to be roughly the same, and yet individual.  So the prints are different but related, pattern is the same, one red, one blue.  (And the red is not nearly so shocking a color in person, not sure what was up with the color and my camera this morning.) I hope they enjoy them!  Happy almost birthday, boys!
